Three different problems require three different decisions

Context-assisted review
The selected description column and nearby row text are scored against candidate gene names, symbols, and HGNC identifiers. Context can rank candidates, but the browser does not silently convert an ambiguous cell. The reviewer sees each candidate and its approved name before applying a change.
Reference data
The bundled application includes a compact curated baseline for the well-known Excel-affected symbols needed for offline demonstration and common repairs. For broad production use, select a complete HGNC TSV or JSON file under the reference-data control. That reference is parsed locally and its version and record count are written into the output manifest.
What the audit records
Every approved repair includes the file, worksheet, cell address, original display and stored value, replacement symbol, reason, match type, confidence, HGNC ID when available, rule codes, user decision, and verification status. Unresolved ambiguous cells are counted in the manifest.
Data that cannot be reconstructed safely
A converted value may have lost information before the file reached this tool. When two historical symbols collapse to the same date representation, the original cannot be proved from the token alone. The application therefore prioritizes transparent uncertainty over an attractive but unsupported guess.
